You may have read or heard about the Atlanta Journal-Constitution article stating that Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Georgia (Wellpoint) had sent an estimated 202,000 benefits letters containing personal and health information to the wrong addresses last week. We are working with WellPoint to find out whether Emory's PPO members were affected.

We wanted to provide you with the latest information we have received from WellPoint:

WellPoint recently learned that a mailing of Explanation of Benefits (EOB) letters included EOBs that were sent to the incorrect address. These EOBs may have included protected health or personal information.

This was an isolated incident and will not impact future EOB mailings. We have determined the exact cause of this issue and have made changes to prevent it from happening again.

We are determining if members' social security numbers were exposed and, if so, will quickly work to implement the appropriate credit monitoring actions. We will also be offering free credit monitoring to potentially impacted members.

If any of your employees received an EOB belonging to another individual, we ask that they please contact WellPoint's dedicated toll-free number at (866) 800-8776 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. We will provide members with a postage-paid envelope in which the member may return the EOB.

WellPoint is working aggressively to determine affected members and will notify the members as quickly as possible, in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations.

At this time, our human resources and benefits staff do not have any additional information about the mailing. As information becomes available, we will post on the website.
